The Center for Black Digital Research named Andre E. Johnson a #DigBlk Mellon Fellow for 2022. Dr. Johnson's primary area of research is African American rhetoric and public address, with much of it centering at the intersection of rhetoric, race, religion, and rhetorical history. He will work with the Center for Black Digital Research studying the oratory of the Colored Convention Movement. As “the only project based Black digital research center focused on building accessible online archives related to 19th and 20th century Black organizing,” a study of speeches delivered in the conventions would show how delegates constructed and refuted arguments, how they debated with each other, and how they went about establishing the Black rhetorical tradition.
